More Mangoes Would Rain This Year

mangoseasonmay07.JPGThere is some good news for mango lovers around the country as production of the king of fruits is likely to go up this year. Favorable weather conditions in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Orissa have brightened the prospects.

Last year, India produced approximately 1.25 crore tonne of mangoes. The production across India will be up by approximately 15 lakh tonne this year.

Production in UP will be up by 25 percent to 30 percent from last year’s 28 lakh tonne, while production in both Maharashtra and Orissa will also be more compared to last year. Read more

India, with its wide variability of climate and soil, has good potential for growing a wide range of horticulture crops such as fruit, vegetables, potato, tropical tuber crops and mushrooms, ornamental crops, medicinal and aromatic plants, spices and plantation crops like coconut, cashewnut, cocoa, etc.

Since the mid-eighties, the Government identified horticultural crops as means of diversification for making agriculture more profitable through efficient land use, optimum utilization of natural resources and creating skilled employment for rural masses, especially women folk with the past efforts rewarding.
