New Telecom Licenses Issued-Mobile Competition To Go Up

The Government has started issuing telecom licenses to new players, an event that would enhance the competition and benefit the consumers.

Licences for nine companies have been issued. A total of 22 licenses are to be given to three new players

Birla’s Idea Cellular would get license for one circle in Punjab and Swan Telecom for the Delhi and Mumbai circles.

The exercise is expected to be completed by weekend. Read more

Telecommunications In India-Part III

Based on the recommendation of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India , unrestricted open entry, to new Basic Service Operators in all the Service areas including the six service areas where private licences already existed, came into existence.

The country is divided into 21 territorial service areas for the grant of Basic Service licence. The minimum paid-up capital and promoters’ combined net worth for each service areas are to be in accordance with prescribed norms.

The Licence fee, which is in the form of revenue share, is 06 percent/ 08 percent/ 10 percent annual gross revenue w.e.f 01 April 2004 depending on service area. Read more

Telecommunications In India-Part II

In response to the policy changes in the Indian Telecom Sector, the tariff structure has been altered substantially. The Telecommunication Tariff Order issued by TRAI in 1999 began the process of tariff rationalization with an increase in monthly rental and decreasing STD and ISD tariffs. This has reslted in a reduction of STD and ISD tariffs considerably. Read more

Telecommunications In India

The Telecommunications services were introduced in India soon after the invention of telegraphy and telephone.

The first Telegraph line between Kolkata and Diamond Harbour was opened for traffic in 1851.

By March 1884, telegraph messages could be sent from Agra to Kolkata.

The first automatic exchange was commissioned at Shimla in 1913-14 with a capacity of 700 lines. Read more
