There are 439 colleges of Ayurveda, Yoga And Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha And Homoeopathy (AYUSH) in the country out of which 96 collages have postgraduates departments for imparting PG teaching. Under Siddha system there are six Siddha medical colleges. Out of these six, two colleges are having the postgraduate teaching facility. Read more

Alternative Medicine In India

The Department of Indian systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy (ISM&H) established in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in March 1995 was renamed as department of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha And Homoeopathy (AYUSH) in November 2003.
The Indian system of medicine such as Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and drugless therapies like Yoga and Naturopathy have been widely practiced in India for centuries. Homoepathy, though originated in Germany, has been widely accepted and practiced in India.
In post-Independence India, the Government recognized the merit of each of the AYUSH systems and made attempts to develop them as viable systems of medicine.
For the first time, a separate National Policy on Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy-2002 was formulated. The basic objectives of the policy inter-alia are to promote good health, expand the outreach and to ensure affordable AYUSH services to the people, as also to integrate AYUSH in health care delivery systems in the national programmes. The National AIDS Control Organisation

The Government of India launched a comprehensive national AIDS control program from April 1992. First phase of the programme, that is national AIDS control programme I, was initially from 1992-97 and was later extended to 1999.
National AIDS control programme II, commenced with effect from April 1999 and is currently operative. This phase of the programme was launched to achieve two objectives:
1 To reduce the spread of HIV infections
2 To strengthen the capacity of central and state government to responds to HIV/AIDS on a long-term basis. Read more

Tobacco Production To Be Cut By Half

The government is working on a plan to halve tobacco cultivation in 10 years to enable and encourage farmers to diversity to other crops in view of the health risks associated with tobacco consumption.The Tobacco Board is doing the groundwork for reduction of tobacco cultivation while a detailed package is being worked out to provide compensation to farmers, government sources said. The move is in line with steps taken by US, EU and Australia to curtail production of tobacco considered a major cause of cancer and related ailments. Read more
