HRD Ministry Okays IIT Fee Hikes

The HRD Ministry will soon inform IITs about its decision on doubling of fees from the next academic year.
A senior ministry official said Minister Arjun Singh has cleared the CNR Rao committee’s recommendation to double the fees in IITs. The committee had recommended a fee hike for the popular B.Tech course of Rs. 50,000 per year from the existing Rs. 25,000. Read more

Education System To Undergo Massive Change

The central government has finalized a bill that proposes to fix the minimum age for admission to pre-school at 3 years and 10 months.
The draft right to education bill, which will be put up for cabinet consideration in May, would also protect parents and children from screening by schools and prescribes huge fines in case of violation.
Prepared by the Human Resource Development Ministry, the bill says the admission age for Class I should be 5 years and 10 months before beginning of the academic year. This means, the admission age for two years of pre-schools would be 3 years and 10 months. Read more

Americans Flocking To Learn Hindi

According to the US Embassy, 151 American undergraduate and graduate students traveled to India for intensive language training in the last two years. Of them 74 were Hindi students. Since 2006 the US Department of State has sponsored 55 American undergraduate students to study in Indian for a semester or a year through its Gilman Scholarship programme. Read more

OBC Quota In-Creamy Layer Out In Higher Education-Supreme Court

The verdict is out. The Supreme Court consented to the controversial OBC quota in higher Central education institutions.
But there is a rider attached as the creamy layer has been kept out. The court has also recommended reservations should be reviewed every five years.
The Supreme Court has gone with the Parliament and given the go ahead to the politically explosive 27 per cent quota for OBCs. Read more

Five New Course At IP University From This Year

In a bid to give students more scope to enter corporate law, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University has redesigned its five-years BA LLB course. Students applying for the new session will now have the opportunity to either choose the traditional BA LLB or the new entrant BBA LLB.
BBA LLB is designed for those students who want to get into corporate law. This will ensure that they have business grounding before doing MA LLB, said KK. Aggarwal, Vice Chancellor of GGSIPU. He added that due to the course, placement in banks and multinationals would not be a problem. Read more

25 Percent Seats for Poor In Private Schools-Government

Private schools will have to admit at least 25 percent students from economically weaker sections and won’t be allowed to fail any student till class VII, says the new Right to Education (RTE) Bill circulated by the HRD ministry.
Approved by the planning commission on Thursday, the bill has the consent of several other ministries, a top HRD ministry official told HT on Friday. Read more

University Grants Commission (UGC)
University Grants Commission provides financial assistance to universities/ deemed universities for the establishment of SC/ST cells in universities to ensure effective implementation of reservation policy for SCs and STs. The UGC has established SC/ST Cells in 113 Universities including central universities to ensure proper implementation of the reservation policy. The standing committee on SCs/STs monitors and reviews the work undertaken by the universities/colleges.
As per the reservation policy, UGC has earmarked 15 percent and 7.50 percent reservation for SCs and STs respectively in appointments, both in teaching and non-teaching posts, admission, hostel accommodation, etc., in universities/colleges, professional and technical educational institutions administered by the central government.
