Abhinav Bindra Bags Gold Medal At Beijing Olympics

Abhinav Bindra won the gold medal in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle in Beijing on August 11.
Bindra shot a total score of 700.5.
He scored over China’s Zhu Qinan who came with 699.7 points and Finland’s Henri Hakkinen who secured third place with 699.4 points.
Bindra had been fourth after qualifying but had a brilliant final round and even hit a near perfect 10.8 on his last shot to pull in front of Henri Hakkinen.

Small Planet Named After An Indian Scientist
A minor planet in the solar system, which earlier bore just the number 5718 CD4, has now been named after Kollam-based scientist Dr Sainudeen Pattzhy.
Pattazhy, who teaches zoology at a local college, has carried out pioneering research on many environment related issues such as the phenomenon of ‘red rain’ which occurred in Kerala in 2001-the control of mosquitoes, the eco biology of ‘sacred groves’, and the health hazards posed by mobile phone towers. In a deal that would cost $2.3 billion, Tata has acquired keys to Jaguar and Land Rover from US carmaker Ford.

Pay Panel Announces Bonanza For Govt Employees

Sixth Pay Commission on Monday recommended 20-40 percent hikes for central government employees at various levels, with effect from January 1, 2006.
It has also proposed liberal increases in assorted allowances.
Tuition fees can be reimbursed up to Rs. 1,000 per month per child. Transport allowance has quadrupled to RS. 3,200 and a more generous pension scheme. Read more

Tendulkar Turns 16

Sachin Tendulkar became the first man to aggregate 16,000 runs in one-day internationals on Tuesday. Tendulkar reached the milestone during his 35-run knock against Sri Lanka in the rain-marred Commonwealth Bank Triangular Series at the Gabba.
He now has a tally of 16,007 at an average of 44.21 in 409 matches. He has hammered 41 centuries and 87 half-centuries.
His nearest competitor sits 4000 runs behind.
