Incredible India To Be Promoted By Foreign Airlines

Foreign airlines like British Airways, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa and Cathay Pacific will now promote Indian destinations. The government has issued an instruction to all airlines for promoting Indian heritage and culture on board. Non-compliance would cost dearly as these airlines may not get seat entitlements. Aviation ministry has devised this unique method to promote ‘Incredible India’.

Nearly 100 foreign airlines are operating flights to various Indian destinations.

Countries whose designated carriers promote India as a tourist destination would be considered for seat entitlements. We have also asked airlines to show short films on India’s heritage cites to passengers on India bound flight’ a government official said.

Germany based Lufthansa has agreed to popularize Indian tourists centres among its Indian-bound flights. Other airlines are also expected to follow suit. The ministry of civil aviation along with the tourism ministry would review the impact of its suggestion to foreign airlines within the next three months.

The government is planning to give visa-on-arrival to foreign tourists from 18 countries to boost tourism. The current target is to increase the number of foreign tourist arrivals into India to 10 million by 2010.

The tourism industry accounts for about 6 percent of GDP and employs nearly 50 million people. Foreign tourist inflows has multiplier effect on the economy.

It not only generates employment but also give boost to industries.
