The HRD Ministry will soon inform IITs about its decision on doubling of fees from the next academic year.
A senior ministry official said Minister Arjun Singh has cleared the CNR Rao committee’s recommendation to double the fees in IITs. The committee had recommended a fee hike for the popular B.Tech course of Rs. 50,000 per year from the existing Rs. 25,000.
Every year about two lakh students appear for the joint Entrance (JEE) for admission to 4,800 seats in IITs across the country.
In the case of the M.Tech course, the committee had recommended that the annual fees be increased to Rs. 50,000 from Rs. 25,000.
It however said that students who are not sponsored should get a waiver of Rs. 20,000.
All IIT directors, who are members of the IIT Council headed by Singh had already approved the hike.
With Singh’s green signal, the ministry will now inform individual IITs about the decision.
“In the wake of the hike in fees in IIMs, it would not had been possible for the ministry to refuse a hike in fees in IITs, where the fees were last increased about a decade age,” a senior ministry official said.
