A number of anthropologists have given a variety of classifications of the Indian people. According to one classification following origins have been noted
1. The Mongoloids
2. Indo-Aryans
3. Dravidians
4. Mongolo-Dravidians
5. Aryo-Dravidians
6. Seytbo-Dravidians
7. Turko-Iranians
However, a detailed and clear analysis of the Indian population is given by Dr. B.S. Guha. According to him there are six main racial groups and from these a few sub-groups got formed which formulate the Indian population.
Negritos
There sub-group survivals are found among the Kadars and Palagans of Cochin and Travancore Hills; Nagas of Nagaland; Rajmahal tribes of Easter Bihar and among the Andamans.
Proto-Australoids
The have left no trace as such in India.
Mongoloids
This racial group is largely visible in Sikkim, Bhutan and North-Eastern region.
Mediterranean
These are of three types: Palaco-Mediterranean who are of medium height, dark-skinned and slight build. They are largely to be found in Kannad, Tamil and Malayalam areas; the Mediterranean are fair complexioned and are found in the Punjab, in other words the Aryanized people; Oriental Mediterranean are people with long noses and fair skin, found largely in the Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
The Alpinoid
The Alpinoid are also of three types: The traces of the first are found in Gujarat; the second type are found in West-Bengal, Orissa, Kathiwar, Tamil and Coorg tracts and the third type are close to the Parsis.
