The major religions of India are Hinduism, Islam and Christianity. Besides, there are the followers of Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism and Zoroastrianism (Parsis).

Despite the diversities; India has never lost the ideal of unity.

Ramayana and Mahabharata are the epics of India and are read with much devotion even in the distant nooks and corners of the country. That the great epics have helped in fostering the unity of the country since early times to the present day need no emphasis.

They are rightly regarded as the common heritage of all the Indians.

Apart from the epics, the Sanskrit language fostered the unity of the country. Even though it was not the language of the masses, yet it remained a common medium of communication between the elite in different and distant parts of the country.

Sanskrit is regarded as the mother especially Malayalam, Telgu and Kanada, the number of words of Sanskrit origin used is as high as 60 to 75 percent.

The places of Hindu pilgrimage such as Kasi and Haridwar in the north, Tirupati and Rameswaram in the south, Dwaraka in the west and Jagannath Puri in the east are visited by people from all over the country fostering national integration since the ancient times.

Beneath the manifold diversity of physical and social type, language, custom and religion, which strikes the observer in India, there can still be discerned a certain underlying uniformity of life from the Himalayas to Cape Comorin. There is in fact, an Indian character, a general Indian personality, which we cannot resolve into its component elements.
