PTC India Ltd., (formerly known as Power Trading Corporation of India Limited.) the leading provider of power market solutions in India, is a Government of India initiated Public-Private Partnership, whose primary focus is to develop a commercially vibrant power market in the country and provide long-term intermediation between the project developer and the final offtakers of power.

It was set up in April 1999 with the main objective of catelysing development of Mega Power Projects and other power projects by acting as a single entity to enter into Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) on the one side and multipartite power purchase agreements with users / SEBs under long term arrangement on the other, thus insulating the independent power producers from protracted negotiations with multiple SEBs and receivable risks.

Power trading corporation has also been mandated for power trading to optimally utilize the existing resources in the country as as also promoting exchange of power with neighbouring counties. Power trading corporation works as a nodal agency to deal with matters relating to exchange of power between India and its neighbouring countries.

Power trading corporation (PTC) is the pioneer in developing and implementing the concept of power trading in India and has successfully demonstrated its efficacy in optimally utilizing the existing infrastructure within the country to the benefit of all.

While its started trading with limited transactions during 1999-2000 (28.35 MUs) but trading on a sustained basis grew from June 2001 to a figure of 8,887 MUs as on 31 March 2005. Power trading corporation has also introduced various innovations in the power market in India through ‘differential pricing’ concept for providing electricity at different times of day.

Since its inception, PTC has sought to provide holistic services that address the sustainability of a power market model, including intermediation for long-term supply of power from identified domestic and cross-border power projects, providing equity support to select power projects, advisory services and foray into providing fuel linkages to power plants of various utilities/generators participating in the power market.

Power trading corporation today is not just the leading power trader in the country but has also diversified into the unique role of being a total solutions provider in the power supply business.
