As part of the modernization programme, computerization of the registration sorting work in major mail offices has been undertaken.
A beginning in this regard was made during the financial year 1995-96 by computerizing registration sorting work at Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai. Up to 31st March 2004, registration sorting work in 69 mail offices were computerized.
Computerisation of Transit Mail Offices
Another area identified for computerization is the Transit mail offices (TMOs). The TMOs have a vital role in the smooth handling and transmission of closed mailbags.
Two TMOs, namely, Delhi Airport TMO and Bombay Airport TMO, were computerized during the financial year 1996-97. Twenty-eight TMOs were computerized till 31 March 2004.
Modernisation of Mail Offices
To improve the ergonomics and ambiance of the mail offices, these are being modernized with better operational equipments and furniture.
The project was started during the financial year 1995-96, when 22 mail offices were modernized. By 31 March 2004, 236 Mail offices were modernized.
Computerisation of Head Record Offices
As part of modernization programme, computerization of the Head Record Office (HRO) for proper maintenance of valuable records their prompt retrieval and efficient office management has been undertaken.
A beginning in this regard was made during 1997-98 by computerizing HRO, Hyderabad sorting division.
