First class mail, viz., post cards, inland letter cards and envelopes, are airlifted wherever found advantageous, without any surcharge, between stations connected by air. Second-class mail, viz., book packets, registered newspapers and periodicals are carried by surface transport, i.e., rail and road transport.
The Department has handled about 863.52 crore pieces of mail during the year 2003-04. Out of this 750.55 crore constituted first-class, mail which comprised household mail and official and business correspondence. Second-class mail was 112.96 crore.
The volume of unregistered mails handled during 2003-04 was to the extent of 842.16 crore; of which rural mail constituted 338.33 crore and urban mail 503.82 crore. The registered mail handled during 2003-04 was 21.35 crore. Besides, the Department handled 9.93 crore money orders of total value of Rs. 6875 crore during 2003-04.
Automatic Mail Processing Centers
In the 1990s, the department had set up two automatic mail processing centres at Mumbai and Chennai. Two more such centres are planned to be set during the 10th Five Year plan at Kolkata and Delhi.
Money Order
Money order service was introduced in 1880. Under the ordinary money order scheme, remittance of an amount upto Rs. 5,000 can be made through each money order. It also provides facility to send a message to the addressee along with the money transmitted. In 2003-04, 9.93 crore money orders were booked for a value of Rs. 6875 crore.
Money Order transmission through VSAT network
As a part of modernization strategy, in 1994, the department of posts successfully introduced Satellite based money order service for speedy transmission of money orders throughout the country.
150 high-speed Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSATs) were established in major post offices during the Ninth Five Year Plan which are in turn connected to more than 1,300 Extended Satellite Money Order Stations (ESMOs), located in neighbouring post offices through telephone network.
