mangoseasonmay07.JPGThere is some good news for mango lovers around the country as production of the king of fruits is likely to go up this year. Favorable weather conditions in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Orissa have brightened the prospects.

Last year, India produced approximately 1.25 crore tonne of mangoes. The production across India will be up by approximately 15 lakh tonne this year.

Production in UP will be up by 25 percent to 30 percent from last year’s 28 lakh tonne, while production in both Maharashtra and Orissa will also be more compared to last year.

Arrival of mangoes from UP, which is the second largest producer, will start from the first week of June. UP mainly produces the Dussehri variety followed by langda and Chausa.

Due to rains, mango production may fall in Andhra Pradesh which is the largest producer and also Karnataka. But production is expected to fare well in other major mango producing states like Bihar, Orissa, Maharashtra and Gujrat. In Maharashtra, production of mangoes will be at an average level at 7.1 lakh tonne as against 6.46 lakh tonne last year.

Alphonso is majorly grown in the Konkan belt of Maharashtra and arrivals have already started production was below the average of seven to eight lakh tonne, but this year, there will be above average production

AP last year produced 38.65 lakh tonne of mangoes over an area of 4.7 lakh hectares. Arrivals in Andhra Pradesh will start from April 15.

India is the largest mango producer in the world contributing over 55 percent of the total world production.

The yellow fruit grows in approximately 2.25 crore hectare of land. The country also produces the largest varieties of mangoes in different states.
