The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) was incorporated in November 1975 with the objective of planning, promoting and organizing integrated development of thermal power in the country. National Thermal Power Corporation Limited is schedule ‘A’ ‘Navratna’ company having a total approved investment of Rs. 88,906.31 crore.

The Corporation has under operation/implementation coal based super thermal power plants projects at thirteen locations and combined cycle gas power projects at seven locations. The commissioned capacity of National Thermal Power Corporation Limited owned stations as on 31 March 2005 is 24,345 MW.

In addition, it has acquired 314 MW of captive power plants of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) through formation of joint venture companies with it. During the year 2004-05, an all time high generation of over 1,59,110 MUs was achieved registering an increase of 6.7 percent over the previous year’s generation of 1,40,868 MUs. National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) achieved ever-highest PLF of 85.5 percent since inception.

Besides its own stations, National Thermal Power Corporation Limited also manages the Badarpur Thermal Power Stations (BTPS) in Delhi (705 MW). It is at present implementing 10 power projects with a capacity of 8,010 MW Corporate Plan adopted by National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) envisages it to become a 40,000 MW plus company by the year 2012.

National Thermal Power Corporation Limited Hydro is a wholly-owned subsidiary to carry out business of implementing and operating small and medium hydro power projects of up to 250 capacities. National Thermal Power Corporation Limited has signed MoU with REC for setting up decentralized Distribution Generation scheme for rural electrification through non-conventional energy sources.

National Thermal Power Corporation Limited Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN) a subsidiary of National Thermal Power Corporation Limited transacted business with nine state utilities trading in more-than 2,613 MUs in 2004-05. Consultancy wing of National Thermal Power Corporation Limited achieved turn over of Rs. 20.5 crore and profit of Rs. 6 crore during the year 2004-05.
