The information technology sector best symbolizes India’s success. The progress of the IT sector has been phenomenal in the last two decades. IT has become India’s biggest export now.

The IT industry’s roots were laid by the investment in education and creation of institutions like the IITs installed a system that created talent and inculcated superior intelligence.

The government’s role was enormous when the industry was still nascent. Creation of software technology parks of India or virtual software technology parks, with tax benefits erased the geographical constraints that IT faced initially. After the Y2K, when systems were on the verge of a crash, the entire industry was on tenterhooks, our growth still continued at a healthy rate. The emergence of the BPO industry was a landmark in our development.

But there are a lot of things that have to be rectified. There is a dearth of information in local klanguages. So is the cost of connectivity, software and hardware. We must strive towards making the content as compelling as soaps and sports on television, to create an appeal which will make it an important part of every household in India.

IT does not mean computers or the Internet, it means more access through community centers, cell phones or land lines. Computerization of the Indian Railways as an example of IT making life easier for the common man.
