A Look Into Union Budget of India 2008-2009

Total Expenditure

  • Total plan spending in 2008/09 - 2.4 trillion rupees ($60.3 billion).
  • Non-plan spending seen at 5.07 trillion rupees.

Farmer Loan Waived

Government to waive debts of small farmers. The total cost of the farm debt waiver scheme will be 600 billion rupees.

Fiscal Deficit

  • Fiscal deficit in 2008/09 seen at 2.5 percent of GDP compared to 3.1 percent of GDP in the previous year.
  • Revenue deficit seen at 1 percent of GDP in 2008/09 compared to 1.4 percent of GDP the previous year.

Expected Growth

Government confident of GDP growth of 8.8 percent in 2007/08. Read more

Man Who Gave Us Electronic Voting System Is No More

S. Rangarajan, the man who gave India the Electronic Voting Machine has passed away. He was more popular under he penname Sujatha which he used for his articles, novels, screenplay and dialogues for several Tamil movies.

He passed away in Chennai on Wednesday. He was 73.

S Rangarajan was an electronic engineer for Bharat Electronics Limited, and headed the team that designed and manufactured the EVM first used in 1989.

In the 2004 general elections, nearly one million EVMs were used a sign of its success. Subsequently, he also fine tuned the EVM to its present form.

Writing under his wife Sujatha’s name, he entertained three generations of Tamil readers with lucid prose and humour.. He could demystify the most complex fact in a layman’s language. He wrote 100 novels and more than 200 short stories, and his fictional private detectives Ganesh and Vasanth are part of Tamil folklore.

He was also a much sought-after screen play and dialogue writer who worked with top directors like K. Balachander, Mani Rathnam and Shankar (the latest being Sivaji). At the time of his death, he was working on Shankar’s mega move, Robo starring Rajnikanth and Aishwarya Rai.

New Telecom Licenses Issued-Mobile Competition To Go Up

The Government has started issuing telecom licenses to new players, an event that would enhance the competition and benefit the consumers.

Licences for nine companies have been issued. A total of 22 licenses are to be given to three new players

Birla’s Idea Cellular would get license for one circle in Punjab and Swan Telecom for the Delhi and Mumbai circles.

The exercise is expected to be completed by weekend. Read more

Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL):

The VSNL is privatized from 13 February 2002 with 25 percent of Government equity being bought by M/s Panatone Finvest Limited (TATA). The management control of VSNL is also passed over to M/s Panatone Finvest Limited. Government still holds 26.12 percent equity in VSNL. Read more

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) came into existence on 1 October, 2000 by corporatisation of erstwhile Department of Telecom Service/Telecom operations to upgrade the quality of service, expand the telecom network, introduce new services, provide telecom service in all village and build customer’s confidence. Number of Supreme Court Judges To Be Increased

The number of judges in supreme court is going to increase. In a bid to clear the heavy backlog of cases and render speedy justice, Government on Thursday proposed to increase the strength of Supreme Court judges from 25 to 30.

This decision was taken in a meeting of the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The members approved a proposal to increase the number of judges in the apex court, excluding the Chief Justice, to 30. Presently this number is 25. Read more

State Bank and Three Other Banks Cut Loan Rates

Four public sector banks, led by State Bank of India, today announced slashing their prime lending rates by 0.25-0.50 percentage points. This move would reduce loan rates .

For the second time in less than 10 days, the country’s largest lender SBI slashed its prime rate by 0.25% point to 12.25 percent.

The bank had announced on February 11 another cut of 0.25 percent age points effective February 16. Read more

Telecommunications In India-Part IV

Infrastructure Provider Category-I

The applicant company for IP-I requires registration only with DoT. Companies registered as IP-I can provide assets such as dark fibre, right of way, duct space and tower. All Indian Registered companies are eligible to apply. There is no restriction of foreign equity and number of entrants. There is no entry fee and bank guarantee.

The applicant company is required to pay Rs. 5,000 as processing fee along with the application. So far 92 companies have been registered as Infrastructure Provider Category-I. Read more
